Students qualify for ELW classes based on their score on the Stanford English Language Proficiency (SELP) test. This test is taken prior to enrollment at GES. Enrollment is mandatory based on the student’s score. (Additional tuition fees apply.) For 3 hours a week students are pulled from general curriculum to work with a grade level-specific ELW teacher and a small group of students (approximately 5) in the same grade level. ELW teachers also provide additional support in content areas, as needed.
The goal of the program is to increase students’ English proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking as measured by the SELP. Students who receive a satisfactory score on the SELP, which is conducted each semester, will pass out of ELW.
